Scholarships and Awards

There are variety of scholarships and awards available to both Canadian and international students. Canadian students with outstanding academic records are encouraged to apply for federal and provincial government awards. Foreign students are encouraged to apply for awards from their home countries that may be used for foreign study. Be sure to read all application instructions carefully and submit your application by the appropriate deadline.

NSERC Top-ups

iCore Top-up for NSERC Students

If you are applying for an NSERC post grad scholarship you should also apply for a top-up scholarship from iCore. Application deadline Dec. 1, 2009.

We provide $12 000 in automatic top-ups to our PhD students entering with an NSERC scholarship. In their first year, an PhD student entering with an NSERC will receive:

  • $2000 from the Faculty of Science
  • $10 000 from the President's Doctoral Prize of Distinction

We provide $12 600 in automatic top-ups to our MSc students entering with an NSERC scholarship. In their first year, an MSc student entering with an NSERC will receive:

  • $2000 from the Faculty of Science
  • $4600 from the Walter H. Johns Grad Fellowship
  • $6000 from the Department of Computing Science

Department funding comes with the provision that the student will apply for an iCORE ICT scholarship in November. If you are awarded an iCORE ICT, then it replaces the $6000 Departmental top-up.

External Scholarships

Outstanding Students from China

The China Scholarship Council and the University of Alberta have signed a collaborative co-funding agreement for sponsoring up to 10 doctoral students to study at the University of Alberta. Please refer to the China Scholarship Council for details.

Teaching and Research Assistantships

Each year, the Department of Computing Science provides financial support for approximately 70 students in the graduate program in the form of eight-month teaching and research assistantships. This is designed to cover the cost of tuition and living expenses in Edmonton, and are available to M.Sc. students for up to two years and Ph.D. students for three or four years. Additional summer support is usually provided by the student's supervisor. International students may also be considered for a tuition supplement to offset differential fees.

Every applicant who is admitted to a graduate degree program in CS is automatically considered for a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantship.

Financial Assistance and Emergency Funding

Other forms of financial assistance including bursaries and emergency funding as well as student loans are also available. For help with various forms of financial aid, check out the Student Financial Aid Information Centre (SFAIC) located in the Students' Union Building.

Employment Opportunities

At the Department of Computing Science, many professors hire undergraduate and graduate students as research assistants during the school year and in the summer. Talk to your professors about employment opportunities.
